“The name "BarChi" reflects our concept of combining a modern sushi bar with a cozy and inviting dining experience.”

2SD: Can you share the story behind the founding of BarChi Sushi?

Leo Wong: The story behind the founding of BarChi Sushi is rooted in my passion for Japanese cuisine and a desire to bring authentic sushi to the heart of Austin. After years of working in various Japanese restaurants and honing my skills as a sushi chef, I partnered with a group of investors who shared my vision. Together, we created a place where people could enjoy high-quality sushi in a modern and inviting atmosphere. With a vision of blending traditional Japanese flavors with a contemporary dining experience, BarChi Sushi was born in the vibrant 2nd Street District. My partners provided the necessary support and resources, allowing me to focus on crafting a diverse menu with only the freshest ingredients.

2SD: What inspired you to open a sushi restaurant specifically in the 2nd Street District?

Leo Wong: The 2nd Street District is a vibrant and bustling area known for its eclectic mix of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. It seemed like the perfect location to introduce a sushi restaurant that offers both high-quality cuisine and a trendy, urban dining experience. The energy and diversity of the district inspired us to create a space where locals and visitors alike could come together to enjoy fresh, delicious sushi in a stylish setting. Additionally, being just one block from the W Hotel and surrounded by over 50 specialty shops and destinations made it an ideal spot for BarChi Sushi.

2SD: How did you choose the name "BarChi"? Is there a special meaning or story behind it?

Leo Wong: The name "BarChi" reflects our concept of combining a modern sushi bar with a cozy and inviting dining experience. "Bar" represents the social and contemporary aspect of our restaurant, where guests can enjoy a vibrant atmosphere. "Chi" is derived from the Japanese word "chiisai," meaning small, symbolizing our attention to detail and the craftsmanship in each piece of sushi we create. Together, "BarChi" encapsulates our vision of providing a sophisticated yet approachable dining experience.
